The Rodin Project

[EN] Choreographer Russell Maliphant says he has been drawn to the work of French artist Auguste Rodin since he first visited the Musée Rodin in Paris more than 25 years ago. He was inspired by its "immense beauty, sense of weight and gravity and the feeling of movement in the often exaggerated forms."

This new dance piece follows Maliphant's visit to Luxembourg in 2011 with AfterLight, a piece inspired by the works of Vaslav Nijinsky. The Rodin Project is divided into two parts. The first is inspired by Rodin's watercolours, the second by the sculptures for which the artist is probably better known. Known for his enthusiastic exploration of a diverse range of movement vocabularies and techniques, Maliphant is working with a number of leading UK urban dance performers. The score features music from the period in which Rodin lived as well as newly commissioned work by Russian composer Alexander Zekke. In addition, regular Maliphant lighting designer Michael Hulls and set designer Es Devlin are on board, alongside digital artists Hellicar & Lewis with some state of the art projections that create moving washes of colour.

"My idea is to capture some of the energy and emotion of form that is ever present in Rodin's work and connect to the inner states that might be expressed through these arising forms", says the choreographer.

[DE] Russell Maliphant war zuletzt zu Gast im Grand Théâtre mit seinen gefeierten Produktionen Push - gemeinsam mit Sylvie Guillem - und AfterLight im März 2011. Für sein neues Stück ließ sich Russell Maliphant durch die Schönheit, das Gefühl von Bewegung und die Balance zwischen Körperlichkeit und Schwerelosigkeit im Werk von Auguste Rodin, dem großen französischen Bildhauer, inspirieren. Mit dem Ziel, die Energie und Emotion von Rodins Arbeiten zu erfassen, schuf der Choreograph einen zweiteiligen Abend: Den ersten Teil widmet er Rodins Aquarellen, im zweiten Teil bezieht er sich auf seine Skulpturen.

Maliphant bedient sich hierfür unter anderem tänzerischer Formen wie Body-Popping, Locking und Hip-Hop und ermöglicht - ähnlich wie bei einer Skulptur - einen 360° Blick auf die Tänzer.

Depuis vingt-cinq ans, la figure d'Auguste Rodin accompagne le chorégraphe, qui se plaît à penser que, d'une certaine façon, il y a un lien entre Rodin et Nijinsky: «Lorsque vous regardez ce dernier sur les photos d'époque, il y a quelque chose d'éminemment sculptural dans sa gestuelle.» Dans The Rodin Project, Russell Maliphant s'inspire de Rodin, de ses aquarelles et de ses sculptures: «Je veux les utiliser comme point de départ, divisant la pièce en deux sections: les dessins et les sculptures. C'est bien l'énergie de ses formes, leurs torsions qui m'inspirent. Je pense qu'il y a un sens du mouvement, que l'on peut capturer, dans la force du sculpteur». Une danse tout en harmonie donc qui va se frotter aux courbes de la pierre ou du bronze dans l'ombre de Rodin.
