[EN] Widely hailed as the "God of Manga", visionary Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka provides the inspiration for internationally renowned award-winning choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's brand new work TeZukA.

Working with a cast of ten dancers and two musicians, drawn from Europe, Asia and USA, Cherkaoui explores the Tezuka universe - a fascinating blend of tradition, science fiction and contemporary reality. Two of Tezuka's manga stories which are well known in Japanese popular culture - Astro Boy and Buddha - have particularly captured Cherkaoui's imagination in creating this new work.

TeZukA will feature a specially commissioned score from composer Nitin Sawhney, a long-time collaborator of Cherkaoui. Cherkaoui's choreography will attempt to connect to the physical journey of Tezuka's drawings - from a line on a blank page to a single Japanese kanji (letter) to a fully formed manga character. Using the dancers' movements to trace this evolution (plus Tezuka's original illustrations projected onto the stage, alongside

those from artists at Tezuka Productions in Tokyo), Cherkaoui will bring the God of Manga's philosophy, drawings and characters to life. 

[FR] Sacré «Dieu des Mangas» au Japon, comme en atteste le gigantesque musée dédié à son oeuvre, Osamu Tezuka est incontestablement toujours un grand auteur populaire, dont l'influence a été décisive sur l'évolution d'un art (l'animation), d'une industrie (les mangas) et d'une culture. Agitateur et humaniste, Tezuka était soucieux d'exprimer sous mille travestissements une seule et même idée: «Aimez-vous les uns les autres. Aimez toutes les créatures. Aimez tout ce qui est vivant.»

Pour sa nouvelle création, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui s'est profondément inspiré de l'art du grand maître et part, avec dix danseurs et deux musiciens, d'origines européenne, asiatique et américaine, à la rencontre de l'univers de Tezuka - un univers fascinant entre tradition, science-fiction et réalité contemporaine. Pour souligner musicalement sa nouvelle chorégraphie, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui a fait appel à Nitin Sawhney, l'un de ses collaborateurs de longue date.

Deux des oeuvres de Tezuka ont particulièrement retenu l'attention du chorégraphe: Astro Boy et Buddha. Retrouvant le coup de crayon du maître incontesté des mangas, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui s'élance d'une simple ligne sur la page blanche pour en arriver à donner vie, au fil des mouvements, aux dessins et aux personnages.
