#67 CLOSER

PATRICK MARBER

[EN] Hailed as one of the best new plays of the 1990's, Closer won the Evening Standard Award for best comedy, an Oliver Award for Best New Play and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play.

Closer is an exploration into the brutal anatomy of modern love where a quartet of strangers meet, and fall in love and become caught up in a web of sexual desire and betrayal. Dan is an aspiring writer and unrepentant liar, Alice is romantic and mysterious young ingénue, Anna is an accomplished photographer and experienced woman and Larry is a self-described "observer of the human carnival" and obstinate believer in the truth. In this comedy the characters are pitted against each other in a tense struggle that, like most relationships, doesn't ever reach a neat and tidy conclusion.

» Closer has wired itself into the cultural vocabulary in a way that few plays have ever done.
The Observer

» A thrilling love story.
Evening Standard

» One of the best plays of sexual politics in the language.
