Celebrating the Centenary of Les Ballets Russes

[en] In a year filled with tributes to the Ballets Russes, Sadler's Wells evokes the essence of the groundbreaking company - not by trying to reconstruct the ballets of the time, but by embracing these artists' pioneering spirit, keen sense of modernity, and willingness to work across boundaries of genre and convention.

In all aspects the Ballets Russes broke with conventions. Fundamentally experimental, the company drew upon the genius of the leading visual artists, designers, composers, choreographers and dancers of its time to create revolutionary productions. A hundred years later Sadler's Wells follows this tradition by commissioning a full evening of new dance by four closely associated artists - Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Javier de Frutos, Russell Maliphant and Wayne McGregor. Just like the Ballets Russes redefined ballet for the 20th Century, these choreographers have advanced the art of dance and helped bring it into the 21st Century.

The last choreography of the production, Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez by Javier de Frutos, contains scenes of a sexual and violent nature that may offend certain viewers (especially children).

[de] In the spirit of Diaghilev ist den Ballets Russes gewidmet, der legendären, von Sergej Diaghilev gemanagten Truppe russischer Tänzer, die vor 100 Jahren den Aufbruch in die Moderne begannen. Im Sturm eroberte die "wilde Horde" 1909 das Pariser Publikum und von da aus die ganze westliche Welt, deren Kunstproduktion sie mit wechselnden avantgardistischen Konzepten nachhaltig beeinflusste.

[fr] Dans cette année du centenaire de la création des Ballets Russes, Sadler's Wells en appelle à l'essence de la légendaire compagnie de Sergej Diaghilev. Amateur génial, imprésario et directeur avisé, Diaghilev inventa avec les Ballets Russes une nouvelle forme de spectacle, alliant danse, musique, peinture et poésie de son époque. 100 ans plus tard, Sadler's Wells compte en capter l'esprit pionnier et le sens incroyable de la modernité en demandant à Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Javier de Frutos, Russell Maliphant et Wayne McGregor de signer quatre chorégraphies inspirées de ces mêmes idéaux. À l'image de ce que les Ballets Russes furent pour le 20e siècle, ces quatre chorégraphes ont tous contribués à redéfinir la danse et à la faire rentrer de plain-pied dans le 21e siècle.

La dernière chorégraphie de ce spectacle, Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez de Javier de Frutos, comporte des scènes parfois violentes pouvant heurter la sensibilité de certains spectateurs (enfants en particulier).
